Can someone please help me with the differences for past and present simple?
I don't know when to make use of them.

I'm think the present simple is used when an action is finished, and the past simple for a particular time in the present. Am I right??????

We use the simple present to express general
actions, action happens all the time, or habitually and facts

we use the Simple Past to express an action that started and finished at a specific time in the past

You know it...

The present simple is used for 4 different situations:
1. A state. A state is a natural disposition of a certain thing that is not subject to change. For example, the sun rises in the east. That is the state of the sun and it is not subject to change. Also you can say fish live in water.
2. Habit. Something that somebody does on a regular basis whether it be daily, weekly, monthly or yearly. I go to school everyday. I travel during my vacation time. I eat pizza on Fridays.
3. Event. This is something that causes some type of feeling or emotion over something that has taken place in a person's life. It saddens me when countries go to war. It angers me when people call me early in the morning. It makes me happy to see students benefitting.
4. Facts. Facts are pieces of truthful information that are subject to change. Twenty students study in my class. He lives on Hadda street.

As for the past simple, well it is for an action that happened at a specific time in the past. When we use the past simple, we are focusing on the time of the action and not the action itself. If we want to focus on the action itself then we use the present perfect. I hope that cleared up a bit of confusion.
